A mixture of (p-bromophenyl)phenylphosphine and diphenylphosphine was treated with 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde and an ester of phenylboronic acid to obtain a mixture of 4-(p-bromophenyl)phenylphosphino- and 4-diphenylphosphino-2-phenyl-4H-1,3,2-dioxaboraphenanthrenes. The X-ray analysis of 3 : 2 mixed crystals of the two compounds (disordered structure) suggests intramolecular interaction between the π systems of the dioxaborinane ring and the unsubstituted phenyl ring at the phosphorus atom. In a similar way, 4-methyl(phenyl)phosphino-2-phenyl-4H-1,3,2-dioxaboraphenanthrene and its derivatives, bis[(2-phenyl-4H-1,3,2-dioxaboraphenanthren-4-yl)phenylphosphino]methane and bis[(2-phenyl-5,6-benzo-1,3,2-dioxaborinan-4-yl)phenylphosphino]methane were obtained, respectively, from methyl(phenyl)phosphine and bis(phenylphosphino)methane. According to NMR spectral data, bis[(2-phenyl-5,6-benzo-1,3,2-dioxaborinan-4-yl)phenylphosphino]methane features similar intramolecular dispersion interactions. Borylation of bis(α-hydroxyalkyl)benzylphosphines gave 5-benzyl-2-phenyl-1,3,2,5-dioxaboraphosphorinanes. X-ray and NMR spectral data indicate the presence of only donor-acceptor and n-σC-O* interactions in the latter compounds.
