Kinetic, mechanistic, and modeling study of the OH-radical-initiated oxidation of di-n-butoxymethane (DNBM)

Di-n-butoxymethane (DNBM) is a potential diesel fuel component to improve the atmospheric properties of the fuel exhaust. The widespread use of organic compounds such as DNMB will result in their release to the atmosphere in significant quantities, thus the potential arises for possible adverse effects on tropospheric chemistry. Product formation in the OH-radical-initiated oxidation of DNBM in the presence of NOx was studied in an indoor photoreactor and in the outdoor simulation chamber EUPHORE. The major reaction products obtained in the air were n-butoxymethyl formate (NBMF) and propionaldehyde with a molar yield of ~ 80 mole % for each compound. Smaller amounts of di-n-butyl carbonate (DNBC), n-butyl formate, and n-butoxymethyl butyrate were also formed. The short tropospheric lifetimes of NBMF and DNBC indicated that reaction with OH is the dominant sink for both compounds and that transport to remote areas plays a minor role in their regional and global atmospheric chemistry. A photochemical mechanism was developed to describe the OH-initiated degradation of DNBM in the presence of NOx. Experimentally obtained and modeled concentration - time profiles for selected reactants showed good agreement.
