Synthesis and Some Properties of New Substituted 3-Cyano-4-[2-furyl(thienyl)]-3,4-dihydropyridine-2(1H)-thiones

N-Methylmorpholinium 3-cyano-5-(2-methoxyphenylcarbamoyl)-6-methyl-4-[2-furyl(or thienyl)]-1,4-dihydropyridine-2-thiolates were synthesized by reaction of N-(o-methoxyphenyl)acetoacetamide and 3-[2-furyl(or thienyl)]-2-cyanothioacrylamide in the presence of N-methylmorpholine. Acid treatment of the products afforded corresponding substituted 3-cyano-4-(2-thienyl)pyridine-2(1H)-thione and 3-cyano-4-(2-furyl)-3,4-dihydropyridine-2(1H)-thione. The latter was used to prepare 2-alkylthio-1,4-dihydropyridines and thieno[2,3-b]pyridine. Substituted 2-allylthio-1,4-dihydropyridine underwent [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement into 3-allylthio-3-cyano-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridine-2-thione.
