Enones 1a-c, 4 and 7a, b were reacted with methyl propionyl acetate in basic medium to yield the pyrans 3a-c, dihydronaphtho[1,2-b]pyrans 8a, b and the cyclohexeno[1,2-b]pyran derivative 6. Compounds 3a-c, 6 and 8a, b could be converted into the pyridine derivatives 9a-c, 10 and 11 a, b respectively.
