We describe here the synthesis of 2-(4-nitrobenzyloxycarbonyl)succinic acid 1-allyl ester 4-tert-butyl ester, and an easily attainable deprotection route to the removal of each one of the ester functionalities, to give compounds useful as building blocks and formally equivalent to a carboxy analog of aspartic acid.
