Aluminum, tripentyl-, also known as triisopentylaluminum or TIPA, is an organoaluminum compound with the chemical formula (C5H11)3Al. It is a colorless, highly flammable, and pyrophoric liquid, which means it ignites spontaneously upon contact with air. TIPA is primarily used as a cocatalyst in the production of polyolefins, particularly in the Ziegler-Natta catalyst system for the polymerization of ethylene and propylene. It is also employed as a reducing agent in various chemical reactions and as a scavenger for trace impurities in hydrocarbon streams. Due to its high reactivity and potential hazards, TIPA must be handled with extreme caution and stored under an inert atmosphere.
