Rate coefficients for the reactions CH3S+O2 products(1) and CH3S+NO2products(2) have been measured at 298 K by laser induced fluoroscence detection of CH3S which was generally by pulsed 248-nm laser photolysis of CH3SSCH3. k1 was found to be less than 2.5E-18 cm3 s-1, k2 was measured to be (6.10+/-0.90)E-11 cm3 s-1.The mechanism of reactions 1 and 2 was investigated. The major product in reaction 2 is NO, with a yield of 0.80+/-0.20.Secondary production of NO was observed, indicating that CH3SO formed in reaction 2 also reacts with NO2, with a rate coefficient of (8+/-5)E-12 cm3 s-1.At long reaction times laser excited fluorescence was detected from a product, possibly CH3SO2.
