The synthesis and binding properties of a molecular cleft for adenine recognition based on a new hydroxyimide scaffold is described. NMR titration experiments in various solvents as well as isothermal titration calorimetry results are presented which demonstrate that, in chloroform, the cleft gives association constants for 9-ethyladenine that are 20 times greater than for the corresponding cleft derived from Kemp's triacid.
