Diaryl diselenides and related compounds as oxygen-transfer agents
Giurg, Mirosaw,Syper, Ludwik
, p. 970 - 985 (2008)
The progress in application of diaryl diselenides and related compounds as transfer agents is presented. The review is limited to the diaryl diselenides having electron-withdrawing substituents, such as nitro, trifluoromethyl, carbamoylphenyl, and polymeric diselenides PADS and PPDS. The methods of their synthesis are described. These compounds are used as effective catalyst for a simple and multi-electron hydroperoxide oxidation of different organic compounds. Transformation of functional groups, cycloalkanones ring contraction, cyclocondensation and degradation of electron-rich arenes is described. Mechanisms of the reactions involved Se(II) and Se(IV) intermediates are discussed.

supporting information, p. 14002 - 14010 (2020/10/02)
RNA interference is an essential and powerful tool for targeting and verifying specific gene functions. Conditional control of small interfering RNA (siRNA) activity, especially using light activation, is a potential method for regulating target gene expr
Modular and scalable synthesis of nematode pheromone ascarosides: Implications in eliciting plant defense response
Chen, Lan,Deng, Xu,Guo, Xiaoli,Ma, Jinjin,Ning, Shuai,Yang, Chao,Zeng, Guangyao,Zhang, Lei,Zhou, Yingjun
supporting information, p. 4956 - 4961 (2020/07/30)
A highly efficient and modular synthesis of nematode pheromone ascarosides was developed, which highlights a 4-step scalable synthesis of the common intermediate 10 in 23percent yield from commercially available l-rhamnose by using orthoesterification/benzylation/orthoester rearrangement as the key step. Six diverse ascarosides were synthesized accordingly. Notably, biological investigations revealed that ascrNo.1 and ascrNo.18 treatment resulted in enhanced callose accumulation in Arabidopsis leaves. And ascrNo.18 also increased the expression of defense-related genes such as PR1, PDF1.2, LOX2 and AOS, which might contribute to the enhanced plant defense responses. This study not only allows a facile access to 1-O, 2-O, and 4-O substituted ascarosides, but also provides valuable insights into their biological activities in inducing plant defense response, as well as their mode of action.
H-Bonding-promoted radical addition of simple alcohols to unactivated alkenes
Tian, Yunfei,Liu, Zhong-Quan
supporting information, p. 5230 - 5235 (2017/11/09)
H-Bonding-induced radical addition of simple alcohols to unactivated olefins was achieved. It effectively solved the long-standing problems of reactivity and selectivity in this type of reaction. The hydroxyalkylation occurred via site-specific cleavage of the α-hydroxyl-C-H bond in alcohols. This method allows a highly atom-economical, operationally simple and environmentally benign access to diverse primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols, diols, and even polyfluorinated alcohols. These useful chemicals are traditionally synthesized by using commercially unavailable organometallics via complex operations. In contrast, they can be facilely obtained through this protocol utilizing widely available starting materials.
Cyclopropenone catalyzed substitution of alcohols with mesylate ion
Nacsa, Eric D.,Lambert, Tristan H.
supporting information, p. 38 - 41 (2013/03/28)
The cyclopropenone catalyzed nucleophilic substitution of alcohols by methanesulfonate ion with inversion of configuration is described. This work provides an alternative to the Mitsunobu reaction that avoids the use of azodicarboxylates and generation of hydrazine and phosphine oxide byproducts. This transformation is shown to be compatible with a range of functionality. A cyclopropenone scavenge strategy is demonstrated to aid purification.
Catalytic osmium-assisted oxidative cleavage of olefins
-
, (2008/06/13)
An osmium-assisted process for the oxidative cleavage of oxidizable organic compounds such as unsaturated organic compounds, including alkenes and olefins into aldehydes, carboxylic acids, esters, or ketones. The process uses a metal catalyst comprising osmium and a peroxy compound selected from the group consisting of peroxymonosulfuric acid and salts thereof to oxidatively cleave the oxidizable organic compound. In particular, the process enables aldehydes, carboxylic acids, esters, or ketones to be selectively produced from the corresponding mono-, 1,1-di-, 1,2-di-, tri-, or tetra-substituted olefins in a reaction that produces the result of ozonolysis but with fewer problems. The present invention further provides a process for oxidizing an aldehyde alone or with the osmium in an interactive solvent to produce an ester or carboxylic acid.

The invention relates to compounds of general structure (I) or salts thereof, wherein B is a nucleobase, X and Z independently are oxygen or sulphur, Y is hydrogen or hydroxy, which optionally may be protected, R1 is hydrocarbyl, which optionally is substituted with a functional group, R2 is hydrogen or hydrocarbyl, which optionally is substituted with a functional group, A is an electron withdrawing or electron donating group capable of moderating the acetal stability of compound (I), L1 and L2 are hydrocarbon linkers, which may be the same or different, L2, when present, being either (i) connected to L1 via the group A, or (ii) directly connected to L1, the group A then being connected to one of linkers L1 and L2, F is a dye label, Q is a coupling group for F, and l, m and n independently are 0 or 1, with the proviso that l is 1 when m is 1, and l is 1 and m is 1 when n is 1. The compounds of formula (I) are useful as deactivatable chain extension terminators. The invention also relates to the use of the compounds (I) in nucleic acid synthesis and nucleic acid sequencing as well as to a method of preparing compounds of Formula (I).

Fouque, Elie,Rousseau, Gerard
, p. 661 - 666 (2007/10/02)
The horse liver and pig liver esterase hydrolysis of racemic medium ring lactones gives with excellent enantiomeric excess the S- (or R) lactones and the corresponding R- (or S) hydroxy acids. This is the first general method to obtain optically pure medium ring lactones.Application to the preparation of (S)-(+)-Phoracantholide I is reported.
