An efficient synthesis of 3-amino-3-deoxyquinic acid, starting from (-)-quinic acid, is reported and its importance for the biosynthesis of 3-amino-5-hydroxybenzoic acid, the precursor of mCvN-units in ansamycin and mitomycin antibiotics is discussed.
