Copper(II) Chelates with New Tridentate Ligand Systems, 2-(N-Tosylamino)benzylidene-and 2-Hydroxybenzylidene-Substituted 8-Aminoquinolines

New tridentate ligands, 8-(2-tosylaminobenzylideneimino)quinoline (L1H) and 8-(5-chlorosalicylideneimino)quinoline (L2H), were used to prepare five-coordinate copper(II) chelates of various compositions and with various coordination spheres. Chemical synthesis (copper acetate, methanol) afforded complexes LCuOCO(Me); electrosynthesis (a copper anode, the same solvent) yielded chelates CuL2. According to X-ray diffraction data, L1CuOCO(Me) is a monomeric complex with a pseudochelating acetate group, while L2CuOCO(Me) is a dimer with a monodentate OCO(Me) group. In the latter complex, a Cu2O2 molecular fragment with increased Cu1-O (2.528 ?) and Cu-Cu1 (3.482 ?) distances is formed. All the chelates described for the first time possess magnetic moments typical of Cu(II) complexes, 1.82-1.85 μB, which barely change in the temperature range 77-298 K.
