1-Chloro-3H-benzindene(III) has been prepared and used as a dienophile in the synthesis of 7H-benzindenofluoranthene derivatives (V) using cyclopentadienones (I) as dienes.A few fluoranthene derivatives (X, XII and XIII) have also been prepared by the condensation of I with α-naphthylpropiolic acid (IIa) and its ester (IIb).Both the adducts (X) and (XIII), on cyclisation with conc. sulphuric acid, afford a mixture of dialkyl phenalenofluoranthenone (XIa) and benzindenofluoranthenone derivatives (XIb). 8,9,10,11-Tetraphenylbenzanthr-7(H)one (VII) and 8,15-diphenylphenalenofluoranthen-7(H)-one (VIII) have also been prepared.
