Polarographic reduction of benzene hexachloride (BHC) has been studied in 4percent (v/v) dimethylformamide in 50percent (v/v) aqueous ethanol, using Britton-Robinson (BR) buffers of varying pH values.Tetramethylammonium bromide (TMAB) (0.1 M) has been used as the supporting electrolyte. The potential-dependent rate constants, kf,h at different pH values have been calculated, αna and k0f,h have been calculated from log kf,h versus Ed.e. plots which are linear thereby suggesting that only a single rate-determining step is involved in the electroreduction of BHC.Based on the values of kinetic parameter, αna and the variation of E1/2 with pH the stoichiometry of the rate-determining step has been established and a mechanism for the polarographic reduction of BHC has been postulated.
