By treating 2-furylmethylene-2-cyanothio(seleno)acetamides with acetocetanilide 6-methyl-5-phenylcarbomoyl-4-(2-furyl)-3-cyano-l,4-dihydropyridine-2-thiolate and -selenolate were prepared. The latter compounds were utilized in the synthesis of substituted 2-alkylthio(seleno)-1,4-dihydropyridines, dehydrated analogs thereof, and thieno[2,3-b]pyridines. 2-AlkyIthio-6-methyl-5-phenyIcarbomoyl-4-(2-furyl)-3-cyano-l,4-dihydropyridine was transformed as a result of [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement into 3-allyl-6-methyl-5-phenylcarbomoyl-4-(2-furyl)-3-cyano-3,4-dihydropyridine-2- (1H)-thione.
