Ethyl piruvate was reacted with aromatic amines to obtain ethyl 1-aryl-4-arylamino-2-methyl-5-oxo-2,5-dihydropyrrol-1H-2-pyrrolecarboxylates. Hydrolysis of the latter with hydrochloric acid gave ethyl 1-aryl-2-methyl-4,5-dioxo-2-pyrrolidinecarboxylates. Oxalyl chloride reacts with the 4-arylamino derivatives to give ethyl 1,5-diaryl-4-methyl-2,3,6-dioxo-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexahydropyrrolo[3,4-b]pyrrole-4- carboxylates, and the reaction with 1-aryl-2-methyl-4,5-dioxo-2-pyrrolidinecarboxylates yields 1-aryl-1-(ethoxycarbonyl)-5-methyl-2-oxo-2,5-dihydro-1H-3-pyrrolyl) oxalates.
