A process for the preparation of aminocarbonyl acids of phosphorus of the general formula I STR1 wherein R1 means OH or C1 -C3 -alkyl which comprises reacting a cyano halide of phosphorus of the general formula II STR2 with at least the stoechiometric amount of water, in formula II R2 meaning a halogen having an atomic weight in the range of from 35 to 80 or C1 -C3 -alkyl and Hal being a halogen having anatomic weight in the range of from 35 to 80.
