The O-alkyl dithiocarbonate (xanthate) derivatives of dimethyl- and diphenylgermane Me2Ge[S2COMe]2, Me2Ge[S2COEt]2, Ph2Ge[S2COMe]2, and Ph2Ge[S2COEt]2 have been prepared in 60-80% yields by reaction of the sodium salt of the dithiocarbonic (xanthic) acid with dichlorodimethyl- or dichlorodiphenylgermane. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis and infrared, Raman, and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The crystal structure of Ph2Ge[S2COMe]2 was determined. Ph2Ge[S2COMe]2, which crystallizes as monoclinic in the space group C2/c (C2h6, No. 15), has the cell parameters a = 16.225 (6) ?, b = 6.897 (2) ?, c = 17.923 (3) ?, β = 96.94 (2)°, V = 1991 (1) ?3, Z = 4, R = 0.0654, and Rw = 0.0674. The environment about germanium is essentially that of a pseudotetrahedron with monodentate xanthate ligands resulting in a S-Ge-S angle of 93.4 (2)° and a C-Ge-C angle of 117.1 (3)°. In contrast with corresponding dithiocarbamate derivatives of germanium, the second sulfur atom is clearly not involved in a secondary interaction. If any such interaction exists, it is through the oxygen atom.
