It is composed of a benzene ring with two thiol groups (mercapto groups) and an acetyl group attached to one of the thiol groups. Thimerosal has been a subject of controversy due to concerns about its potential neurotoxic effects, particularly in children. However, numerous scientific studies have shown that the ethylmercury in Thimerosal is safely cleared from the body and does not cause harm when used in vaccines at the concentrations recommended by health authorities.
