Potentials of electrochemical oxidation EOx and reduction ERed were measured for 12 autocomplexes of the tricyanovinyl series containing donor substituents of the alkyl- and arylamino, aminoaryl, and 3-carbazolyl types, as well as a ferrocenyl donor fragment. The oxidation potentials of these compounds are shifted to the more anodic region as compared to EOx of the free donors, and they are very much more sensitive to the introduction of the acceptor tricyanovinyl fragment than is ERed of tricyanoethylene to the introduction of donor groups. The value of the difference ΔEOx between EOx of an autocomplex and EOx of the free donor is suggested as a measure of donor-acceptor interaction. On the basis of electrochemical measurements the order of the relative donor powers of substituents with reference to the tricyanovinyl acceptor is established, and this does not coincide with the order of absolute donor powers which is determined by the oxidation potential.Correlation between electrochemical and spectral characteristics of autocomplexes is found.
