Synthesis of azetidinones and thiazolidinones from hydrazinopyrimidine as potential antimicrobial agents

6-p-Anisyl-5-cyano-2-hydrazino-3-N-methyl-3,4-dihydropyrimidin-4-one 3 on treatment with different aromatic aldehydes yields schiffs bases 4a-q which on reaction with chloroacetyl chloride and Et3N in dioxane furnishes respective 2-azetidinones 5a-g. Compounds 4a-q on cyclisation with thioglycolic acid afford corresponding 4-thiazolidinones 6a-l. All the products have been evaluated for their in vitro growth inhibitory activity against several microbes like B. megaterium, B. subtili's, E. coli, Ps. fluorescens and A. awamori. The structures of the products 4a-q, 5a-g and 6a- l have been elucidated by elemental analyses and spectral data.
