A photoreactive analogue of coelenterazine having an azido group was synthesized. The analogue showed similar chemi- and bioluminescence properties to those of the natural coelenterazine. Photolysis of the analogue in the presence of diethylamine gave a derivative azepine as the major product.

N-Unsubstituted indol-2-one and 3,4-dihydro-2-quinolinone compounds bearing spirocyclic cyclohexanone/cyclohexadienone rings can be accessed through a novel, improved method entailing the key radical spirocyclization of easily accessible N-methoxymethyl (MOM)-protected 2-iodoanilides derived from 4-azidobenzoic and 2-(4-azidophenyl)acetic acid.

(Chemical Equation Presented) Ipso easy: Cyclization of aryl radicals at the ipso-position of p-azido-substituted benzamides or 2-phenylacetamides results in effective production of spirocyclohexadieniminyl radicals through prompt elimination of molecular nitrogen by transient azidocyclohexadienyl radicals. The resultant iminyl radicals can be exploited for the synthesis of oxindoles or quinolones bearing spirocyclohexadienimine/ cyclohexadienone rings (see picture, TTMSS=tris(trimethylsilyl)silane).
