The potential porphyrin precursor ethyl 5-p-tolylsulfonyl-2,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1-carboxylate has been synthesized and its crystal structure determined by X-ray methods, giving a refinement residual R 0.038 for 5130 observed reflections.
