General Description

(-)-7-[[(2E,6E)-10,11-Dihydroxy-3,7,11-trimethyldodeca-2,6-dienyl]oxy]-2H-1-benzopyran-2-one, also known as phytol or phytanic acid, is a branched chain fatty alcohol with a long hydrocarbon side chain. It is found in high concentrations in chlorophyll and is commonly obtained from plant chlorophyll extracts. Phytol has been found to exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and is also recognized for its potential in the treatment of certain metabolic disorders and as a precursor to the formation of phytanic acid, which has been linked to the rare metabolic disorder Refsum disease. Additionally, phytol has been investigated for its potential use in various pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications.
