2538-85-4 Usage
Uses
Used in Textile Industry:
Mordant Black 17 is used as a dye for wool, silk, and nylon after chrome dyeing. It is also used for dyeing wool and various fiber blended fabrics.
Used in Direct Printing:
Mordant Black 17 can be used in acetic acid chromium pretreatment of wool fabric for direct printing.
Used in Leather and Biological Dyeing:
Mordant Black 17 can be used for dyeing leather and biological materials.
Used as an Indicator:
Mordant Black 17 can be used as an indicator due to its color change properties in different chemical environments.
Chemical Properties:
Mordant Black 17 is a dark brown to purple powder that exhibits different colors when dissolved in various chemicals. In concentrated sulfuric acid, it appears blue, while in concentrated nitric acid, it turns yellow. In a 10% sodium hydroxide solution, it becomes red. Its aqueous solution turns olive yellow brown when mixed with concentrated hydrochloric acid and purple black when mixed with concentrated sodium hydroxide solution. The dye's color and lustre become more red when it encounters copper ions, but it should not come into contact with iron ions.
Standard:
Mordant Black 17 has different ratings for various properties according to ISO and AATCC standards. For ironing fastness, light fastness, fulling, perspiration fastness, soaping, water, alkali, and acid resistance, the ratings range from 3-5, 4-8, 4-5, 3-4, 4-5, 5, and 5, respectively.

Purification Methods
Free it from metallic impurities by three precipitations from aqueous solution by addition of HCl. The precipitated dye is dried at 60o under vacuum and converted into the Na salt with the calculated amount of alkali. It is an indicator in the complexometry of Al, Fe and Zr. Check Digit Verification of cas no
The CAS Registry Mumber 2538-85-4 includes 7 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 4 digits, 2,5,3 and 8 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 8 and 5 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 2538-85:
(6*2)+(5*5)+(4*3)+(3*8)+(2*8)+(1*5)=94
94 % 10 = 4
So 2538-85-4 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
