Mercuration of N-(aroylmethyl)pyridinium salts with mercury(II) trifluoroacetate yields trifluoroacetoxymercurio-substituted pyridinium salts. When the initial pyridinium salt contains methyl groups in position 2 or 4, the reaction can occur at that group; otherwise, the trifluoroacetoxymercurio group is introduced to the methyl carbon atom of the N-aroylmethyl group. Mercurated pyridinium salts can also be obtained by reaction of the corresponding pyridinium N-aroylmethylides with mercury(II) trifluoroacetate. Mercurated pyridinium salts react with hydrochloric acid, calcium chloride, and potassium carbonate. The latter reaction yields the corresponding mercury(II)-containing pyridinium ylides which are promising for use in organic synthesis.
