Two series of nonamethine salts were synthesized by the reaction of 5,9,9-trialkoxy-2,6-nonadienals with aniline and methylaniline.Their condensation with 2-methylbenzothiazole and 2-methyl-5-methoxybenzothiazole ethiodides and 2,3,3-trimethylbenzindolenine methiodide gave thia- and indopentacarbocyanines.Both in the nonamethine salts and in the obtained dyes the effect of methyl groups in the polymethine chromophore on the color of the compounds does not obey the Dewar-Knott rule.
