Potassium (1-phenylethyl), also known as potassium phenylethyl, is an organometallic compound with the chemical formula C8H7K. It is a colorless to pale yellow solid that is soluble in organic solvents. Potassium, (1-phenylethyl)- is formed by the reaction of potassium metal with 1-phenylethyl bromide or 1-phenylethyl chloride. Potassium (1-phenylethyl) is primarily used as a reagent in organic synthesis, particularly in the formation of carbon-carbon bonds through the Negishi coupling reaction. It is also employed in the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and other specialty chemicals. Due to its reactivity with water and air, it must be handled under an inert atmosphere, such as nitrogen or argon, to prevent decomposition.

Ion pair basicities of lithio and potassio salts of some secondary amines were determined by equilibration with benzyl compounds.With these bases it is possible to span a range of about 19 pK-units from pK = 27 up to 46.The structural dependence of thermodynamic as well as kinetic basicity is discussed.Some new effective amide bases for preparative purposes are recommended.For the first time the pK-value of toluene has been determined by direct equilibration.It amounts to 40.7 in tetrahydrofuran.
