Reactions with 3-methyl-1-phenyl-2-pyrazolin-4,5-dione: A novel synthesis of bis-p-(n,n-dialkylaminophenyl) malononitriles

Bis-p-(N,N-dialkylaminophenyl)malononitriles (6a,b) have been prepared previously and in low yields from: a) interaction of dicyanodiazomethane1 or carbonyl cyanide2 with N,N-dialkylanilines; b) as byproducts in tricyanovinylation of tertiary aromatic amines using tetracyanoetylene.3 5 Such syntheses need highly poisonous and difficultly obtained chemicals. This communication describes the preparation of the title compounds by a facile process, with high yields and from readily accessible materials.
