A three-step synthesis of (±)-harmicine from 3,4-dihydro-β- carboline is achieved by addition of a 3-trimethylsilyl-propargyl Grignard reagent, Ag(I)-promoted oxidative cyclization to a pyrrole, and chemoselective hydrogenation of the pyrrole ring.

The silver(I)-promoted oxidative cyclization of homopropargylamines at room temperature provides a novel access to pyrroles. Homopropargylamines are readily available by the addition of a propargyl Grignard reagent to Schiff bases.
