The kinetics of the liberation of H//2 by Mo(III) hydroxide in ordinary and deuterated aqueous methanol alkaline medium was studied. It was shown in a mixture of D//2O plus CH//3OD the reaction rate is higher, k**D/k**H equals 1. 8 (243 degree K). The reaction mechanism, involving in an intermediate hydride complex of molybdenum, is discussed. A kinetic scheme considering the decrease in the reducing properties of Mo(OH)//3 during aging is proposed to explain the kinetic peculiarities of the reaction.
