3,4-bis(4'-methylphenyl) thienothiophene, the first example of peri- (3,4) diaryl thienothiophene has been synthesized by a sequence involving preparation of ketene dithioacetal, Dieckmann type cyclization, ester hydrolysis and decarboxylation.
