Fluoromethyl carbonofluoridate, also known as difluoromethyl carbonofluoridate or DF, is a highly toxic chemical compound with the chemical formula C2F3O2. It is a colorless, volatile liquid that is used as a chemical warfare agent. DF is a potent inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme responsible for breaking down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the nervous system. This inhibition leads to an accumulation of acetylcholine, causing overstimulation of the nervous system and resulting in symptoms such as muscle twitching, difficulty breathing, and eventually paralysis and death. Due to its extreme toxicity and potential for misuse, fluoromethyl carbonofluoridate is classified as a Schedule 1 chemical weapon by the Chemical Weapons Convention.
