A new and a simple method for a three-step total synthesis of the title substance 7 is described.Diels-Alder reaction of methylcyclopentadiene with 2-chloroacrylonitrile catalyzed by Cu(BF4)2 yields mainly 1-methyl-5-norbornen-2-one (1), which after hydrogenation to 1-methyl-2-norbornanone (5) is methylated to fenchone (7).
