The synthesis and properties of the heterocycle Se2C2(CF3)2 are described. Various attempts to prepare related compounds formally derived from ethylene-1,2-diselenol are discussed. The preparation and properties of a representative series of bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,2-diselenetene transition metal complexes are reported. The complexes are similar in behavior to the corresponding dithiolene species, though they are much less stable.
