The nature of the nematic-smectic A (NA) phase transition is discussed in the light of the available experimental data on N(p-n-pentyloxy benzylidene)p-n-alkyl anilines, 50.m series of compounds.The experimental data elucidate the interesting aspects and it is confirmed that the 50.m homologues have a unique place in nO.m compounds.The nature of the NA transition, its dependence on the nematic thermal range, the length of the alkoxy and alkyl chains are discussed.The experimental evidence suggests the presence of TCP near the 50.m homologues.

The heat capacities of the title compound with a purity of 99. 92 mole percent have been measured with an adiabatic-type calorimeter between 11 and 393 K. The transition temperature and the enthalpy and entropy of phase transition for stable crystal yields S//G, S//g yields N and N yields isotropic liquid were determined.

The synthesis and the mesomorphic properties of various series of isometric mesogenic compounds are described.It is confirmed that isometric mesogenic molecules may be nematogenic and/or smectogenic according to the position of the polar rigid core.
