Thiourea, N-phenyl-N'-(4-phenyl-2-thiazolyl)-, also known as Phenylthiourea or PTU, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C14H12N2S. It is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water, alcohol, and ether. PTU is primarily used as an antithyroid drug, functioning by inhibiting the synthesis of thyroid hormones, which helps in the treatment of hyperthyroidism and thyroid storm. Additionally, it has been employed as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of various dyes and pigments, as well as a reagent in analytical chemistry for the detection of metal ions. Due to its potential health risks, including carcinogenicity, PTU has been largely replaced by other antithyroid drugs in medical practice.
