It is formed by the enzyme cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) in response to the presence of double-stranded DNA, which can be a sign of viral infection or other cellular stress. cGAMP then binds to and activates the protein STING (stimulator of interferon genes), which in turn triggers the production of type I interferons and other immune response genes. This process is essential for the innate immune system to detect and respond to viral infections and other threats. The synthesis and signaling of cGAMP are tightly regulated to maintain immune homeostasis and prevent excessive inflammation.
