EPN is primarily used as an insecticide and acaricide, targeting a wide range of pests such as aphids, mites, and beetles. It works by inhibiting the activity of acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system in insects. This inhibition leads to the accumulation of acetylcholine, causing overstimulation and ultimately paralysis and death of the target pests. Due to its high toxicity and potential environmental impact, the use of EPN has been restricted or banned in several countries.
