Oxidation of 1,1-dimethyldiborane. Isolation and characterization of 2,5-dimethyl-1,3,4-trioxadiborolane
Barton, Lawrence,Crump, John M.
, p. 2252 - 2256 (1973)
A study of the reaction between 1,1-dimethyldiborane and oxygen in the gas phase using a mass spectrometric-molecular leak technique is described. The major stable final product at 80° is 2,5-dimethyl-1,3,4-trioxadiborolane, (CH3)2B2O3. This species is isolated and characterized by mass specttal, infrared, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometric and vapor density measurements. Other physical data provided for the molecule include a melting point, vapor pressures, and the heat of vaporization. The mass spectral and nmr data are interpreted to indicate that the unexpected stability of this molecule is due to partial aromatic character.
