In this work, a metal-mediated assembling strategy has been used to organize a series of new assemblies based on tetrapyridylporphyrin (ZnP) on nanostructured TiO2 electrode surfaces, wherein the metal ions (M, M = Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and Mn2+) bridge the pyridyl units of ZnP and (E)-4-[(pyridin-4-ylmethylene)-amino]benzoic acid (A), resulting in a ZnP-M-A assembled mode. The assembled structures were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), computational calculations, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), IR, UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra. The performances of the assembly-sensitized solar cells were also measured under an irradiance of 100 mW cm-2 AM 1.5G sunlight. Photoelectrochemical results reveal a relatively large photocurrent of the ZnP-Mn-A device. Simultaneously, a large open-circuit photovoltage and a significantly improved conversion efficiency of the ZnP-Zn-A device are also observed. These findings may serve as another good testing ground for the fabrication of supramolecular solar cells in future.
Photo-oxidation of Metalloporphyrins in Aqueous Solution
Harriman, Anthony,Porter, George,Walters, Philip
, p. 1335 - 1350 (1983)
Water-soluble, diamagnetic metalloporphyrins have been prepared wich contain either zinc(II), palladium(II) or tin(IV) ions as the central metals and their photophysical properties have been measured in dilute aqueous solution. All the compounds undergo efficient intersystem crossing to form long-lived excited triplet states that can participate in electron-transfer reactions. Thus excitation of the metalloporphyrin in dilute aqueous solution containing an appropriate electron acceptor, such as iron(III), may result in formation of the metalloporphyrin ?-radical cation in quite high yield. These ?-radical cations are powerful oxidants, in some cases E0>1 V vs NHE, but they undergo secondary reactions that lead to formation of ?-dications and isoporphyrins.Despite the high redox potentials, it has not been possible to couple the one-electron reduction of the ?-radical cations to the four-electron oxidation of water to molecular oxygen, even in the presence of a redox catalyst such as RuO2.Therefore these compounds appear to possess little promise as water oxidants in homogeneous photosystems.
Efficient photocatalytic hydrogen generation from water by a cationic cobalt(ii) porphyrin

, p. 1842 - 1844 (2014)
Efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is obtained from 1 M phosphate buffer at pH 7 in the presence of a Ru(bpy)32+ sensitizer, an ascorbic acid sacrificial donor, and a water-soluble Co(ii) porphyrin catalyst. Spectroscopic investigation of the system by stationary and time-resolved techniques enables a complete characterization of the photoinduced dynamics.

Structural interpenetration in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) significantly impacts on their properties and functionalities. However, understanding the interpenetration on third-order nonlinear optics (NLO) of MOFs have not been reported to date. Herein, we report two 3D porphyrinic MOFs, a 2-fold interpenetrated [Zn2(TPyP)(AC)2] (ZnTPyP-1) and a noninterpenetrated [Zn3(TPyP)(H2O)2(C2O4)2] (ZnTPyP-2), constructed from 5,10,15,20-tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrin (TPyP(H2)) and Zn(NO3)2 (AC = acetate, C2O4 = oxalate). ZnTPyP-1 achieves excellent optical limiting (OL) performance with a giant nonlinear absorption coefficient (3.61 × 106 cm/GW) and large third-order susceptibility (7.73 × 10-7 esu), which is much better than ZnTPyP-2 and other reported OL materials. The corresponding MOFs nanosheets are dispersed into a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix to form highly transparent and flexible MOFs/PDMS glasses for practical OL application. In addition, the OL response optimized by adjusting the MOFs concentration in the PDMS matrix and the type of metalloporphyrin are discussed in the ZnTPyP-1 system. The theoretical calculation confirmed that the abundant π-πinteraction from porphyrinic groups in the interpenetrated framework increased the electron delocalization/transfer and boosted the OL performance. This study opens a new avenue to enhance OL performance by the construction of interpenetrated structures and provides a new approach for the preparation of transparent and flexible MOF composites in nonlinear optical applications.

Using the original approach, a series of metallated N-confused porphyrins and metallated porphyrins have been synthesized and characterized. For all the synthesized porphyrins, in vitro studies of cytotoxic activity against K562, U937, HL-60, Jurkat, A549 and HeLa cancer cell lines, the ability to induce apoptosis and effects on the cell cycle as well as the kinetics of proliferative activity of porphyrins and their respective metallated complexes in real time have been developed. The inhibitory activity of metallated porphyrins against human topoisomerase I and the possible mechanism of inhibition have been carried out by modelling using molecular docking.
