Melphalan's mechanism of action involves the formation of interstrand and intrastrand cross-links in DNA, which disrupts the normal functioning of the cell and leads to apoptosis. Its effectiveness in cancer treatment is attributed to its ability to target rapidly dividing cells, which are more susceptible to the damaging effects of DNA cross-linking.
