It is used as an antiasthmatic agent, particularly for the treatment of conditions such as allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma. 1,4-Benzenediol, 2,5-dimethyl-3-[(1-phenyl-1H-tetrazol-5-yl)thio]- functions by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators from mast cells and basophils, thus reducing the symptoms of asthma and other allergic conditions. Teldane has shown to be effective in reducing airway obstruction and improving lung function in patients with asthma. However, due to its potential for causing liver toxicity, it has been withdrawn from the market in some countries.
