As part of a programme aimed at exploiting lignin as a chemical feedstock for less oxygenated fine chemicals, several catalytic C-C bond forming reactions utilising guaiacol imidazole sulfonate are demonstrated. These include the cross-coupling of a Grignard, a non-toxic cyanide source, a benzoxazole, and nitromethane. Several different methods have been examined for obtaining 1-(methoxyphenyl)propane-1, 3-diols. 2-(methoxyphenyl)propane-1, 3-diols and certain hydroxy analogues have been obtained from benzaldoximes converted by oxidation to methoxy- and benzyloxynitromethylbenzenes followed by hydroxymethylation with formaldehyde and catalytic hydrogenation.
