Supported catalysts with controllable solubility were obtained by partial hydrolysis and derivatization of (MeO)3Si(CH2)11N3. The soluble Pd complex 1 thus obtained undergoes further hydrolysis to give an insoluble supported complex. Both materials are effective catalysts for the cyclotrimerization of alkynes. Hence, this methodology allows the soluble analogue of a heterogeneous catalyst to be studied by high-resolution solution NMR spectroscopy. TMS = SiMe3, py = 2-pyridyl.
