Study of aromatic 3-(4-nitrosophenyl)-3-hydroxy-1-(R-phenyl)triazenes (p-NO)C6H4N(OH)N=NC6H4R (where R = o-COOH, o-COOCH3, o-NO2, m-NO2, p-NO2)by UV and IR spectroscopy indicated the presence of N-hydroxide-N-oxide tautomerism in the solid state and a tautomeric nitroso-quinone monoxime equilibrium in solutions.The position of the tautomeric equilibrium depends on the nature of the solvent, the pH of the medium, and the substituents in the ring.
