The scarcity of reliable methods for synthesizing chiral gem-diarylmethine borons limits their applications. Herein, we report a method for highly enantioselective dirhodium-catalyzed B?H bond insertion reactions with diaryl diazomethanes as carbene precursors. These reactions afforded chiral gem-diarylmethine borane compounds in high yield (up to 99 % yield), high activity (turnover numbers up to 14 300), high enantioselectivity (up to 99 % ee) and showed unprecedented broad functional group tolerance. The borane compounds synthesized by this method could be efficiently transformed into diaryl methanol, diaryl methyl amine, and triaryl methane derivatives with good stereospecificity. Mechanistic studies suggested that the borane adduct coordinated to the rhodium catalyst and thus interfered with decomposition of the diazomethane, and that insertion of a rhodium carbene (generated from the diaryl diazomethane) into the B?H bond was most likely the rate-determining step.

Abstract: A new type melamine-based porous organic polymers (SZU-1) has been synthesized with melamine and 2,2′-bipyridyl-5,5′-dialdehyde by a one-pot method and fully characterized. Divalent palladium salts were coordinated to this polymer network which successfully catalyzed the nucleophilic addition reaction of arylboronic acids to aromatic aldehydes. With only 1.0?mol% heterogeneous catalyst loading, high reaction yields (>?85%) can be achieved in most cases. The scope of substrates was also investigated and the catalyst showed universal applicability. Graphic Abstract: The loose and porous melamine-based porous organic polymers (SZU-1) are synthesized by melamine and 2,2′-bipyridyl-5,5′-dialdehyde. The performance of SZU-1 was characterized and most of the substrates achieved high yield (> 85%) in the catalytic performance test.[Figure not available: see fulltext.]
Kinetic studies on tetrabutylammonium bromochromate oxidation of some mono-and di-substituted benzhydrols

, p. 821 - 826 (2018/03/13)
The oxidation of 12 mono- and di-substituted benzhydrols (BH) by tetrabutylammonium bromochromate (TBABC) have been studied in aqueous acetic acid medium. Absence of any effect of added acrylonitrile on the reaction discounts the possibility of a one-electron oxidation, leading to the formation of free radicals. The tetrabutylammonium bromochromate oxidation of 12 mono- and di-substituted benzhydrols complies with the isokinetic relationship and Hammett relationship. The overall mechanism is proposed to involve a cyclic concerted symmetrical transition state leading to the product.

, p. 50 - 56 (2015/01/09)
A stable and efficient Pd(OAc)2/P(1-Nap)3[tri(1-naphthyl)phosphine] catalytic system for the addition of arylboronic acids to aldehydes has been developed. In the presence of Pd(OAc)2 and P(1-Nap)3, the addition reaction of arylboronic acids with aldehydes was carried out smoothly at 65 °C to give a variety of carbinol derivatives in good to excellent yields using a mixture of [bmim][PF6] and water as the solvent. The isolation of the products was readily performed by the extraction with diethyl ether, and the Pd(OAc)2/P(1-Nap)3/[bmim][PF6]/H2O system could be easily recycled and reused six times without significant loss of catalytic activity. Our system not only avoids the use of easily volatile THF or toluene as solvent but also solves the basic problem of palladium catalyst and these phosphine ligand reuse.

A novel copper-catalyzed protocol for the synthesis of carbinol derivatives has been developed. In the presence of copper(II) acetate and dppf, carbinol derivatives were prepared by the addition of arylboronic acids to aromatic aldehydes in good to excellent yields. Moreover, the rigorous exclusion of air or moisture is not required in these transformations.

, p. 5283 - 5288 (2008/02/09)
Phosphinite- and phosphite-based type I palladacycle-catalyzed additions of arylboronic acids with aldehydes, α,β-unsaturated ketones, α-ketoesters, and aldimines are described. Our study showed that readily available phosphinite- and phosphite-based type I palladacycles could possess higher catalytic activity than phosphine-based palladacycles and were highly active, practical catalysts. Our study may pave the road for development of optically active phosphinite- and phosphite-based palladacycles for asymmetric catalysis.
Anionic four-electron donor-based palladacycles as catalysts for addition reactions of arylboronic acids with α,β-unsaturated ketones, aldehydes, and α-ketoesters

, p. 343 - 346 (2007/10/03)
(Chemical Equation Presented) Anionic four-electron donor-based palladacycle-catalyzed 1,4-additions of arylboronic acids with α,β-unsaturated ketones and 1,2-additions of arylboronic acids with aldehydes and α-ketoesters are described. Our study demonstrated that palladacycles were highly efficient, practical catalysts for these addition reactions. The work described here not only opened a new paradigm for the application of palladacycles, but may also pave the road for other metalacycles as practically useful catalysts for such addition reactions including asymmetric ones.
