Bis(diphenylmethyl)carbodiimide, also known as diphenylcarbodiimide or simply DCC, is a chemical compound with the formula (C6H5)2N=C=N(C6H5)2. It is a white crystalline solid that is widely used in organic synthesis as a coupling agent for the formation of amide and ester bonds. DCC works by activating carboxylic acids, which then react with alcohols or amines to form the desired ester or amide products. The reaction proceeds through the formation of an intermediate O-acylisourea or N-acylisourea, which subsequently decomposes to release the final product and regenerate the DCC. This reagent is particularly useful for peptide synthesis and other applications where mild reaction conditions and high yields are desired.
