The reaction of perfluoroalkyl Grignard reagents with phosphorus(III) halides was explored. In the process a new convenient, one-pot, high yield method for the synthesis of (perfluoroalkyl)phosphonic acids has been developed. Perfluoroalkyl Grignard reagents react with phosphorus trichloride or phosphorus tribromide to form (perfluoroalkyl)phosphonous dihalides. Hydrolysis gives the corresponding (perfluoroalkyl)phosphonous acids. Oxidation of the phosphonous acids with H2O2 produces (perfluoroalkyl) phosphonic acids in 60-78% overall yields, based on the corresponding perfluoroalkyl iodide. The X-ray crystal structures of the toluidinium salts, [MeC6H4NH3]2[C2F 5PO3] and [MeC6H4NH 3][C8F17P(O)2OH], are reported.

Azo dyestuffs of the formula: STR1 wherein A is a phenylene or naphthalene nucleus containing at least one phosphoric or phosphonic acid group; R1 and R2 are hydrogen or --SO3 H; and R3 -R6 are hydrogen, --SO3 H, or NR7 Q wherein R7 is hydrogen or lower alkyl and Q is hydrogen or an acyl group of 2 to 8 carbon atoms, at least two of R1 -R6 being --SO3 H and at least one being --NHQ, provided that when the dyestuff is monoazo, then Q is an acyl group of 3 to 8 carbons and when the dyestuff is disazo, Q is hydrogen or an acyl group of 2 to 8 carbon atoms. The dyestuff may be used to reactively dye cellulosic materials, e.g., cotton or cotton/polyester blends. The dyestuffs are particularly useful in dyeing mixed fabrics of cellulose and synthetics together with disperse dyes from a single bath.
