4-Arylthienopyridines and 7-arylthienopyridines have been prepared by heating in polyphosphoric acid 2-(2-thenylamino)-1-arylethanols or propanols and 2-(3-thenylamino)-1-arylethanols and propanols, respectively.Under the Beckmann rearrangement conditions, oximes of 4-aryl-4,5-dihydro-6H-cyclopentathiophen-6-one lead to 4-aryl-4,5-dihydro-6H-thienopyridin-7-one.
