The preparation and characterization of the new chelating ligand dimethyl(o-dimethylarsinophenyl)stibine (stars) and some of its nickel(II) complexes are described. The ligand forms the stable four-coordinate, planar complex [Ni (stars)2](ClO4)2 and the five-coordinate, square-pyramidal complexes [Ni(stars)2X]X and [Ni(stars)2X][B(C6H5)4] (X = Cl, Br, I, NCS). The spectrochemical effect of the dimethylstibine donor group is slightly lower than that of the corresponding dimethylarsine group.
